The National Sports Commission (NSC) has taken a decisive step toward broadening Nigeria’s talent pipeline with the appointment of seasoned sports technocrat Tunde Adelakun as Chairman of its newly established Diaspora Talents Discovery Committee—a move widely seen as a strategic pivot to global best practices in athlete development.
Announcing the appointment on Wednesday, Director General of the NSC, Honourable Bukola Olopade, said the decision underscores the commission’s commitment to maximizing Nigeria’s vast human capital beyond its borders.

According to Olopade, the committee will play a critical role in advancing the Renewed Hope Initiative for sports development by deploying scientific, data-driven approaches to achieve sustainable podium success.
“We are excited about the direction Nigerian sports is taking,” Olopade said. “This committee is central to our vision of harnessing every available resource—both at home and in the diaspora—to deliver excellence. Adelakun brings the experience, credibility, and global network required to drive this mandate.”
Backed by NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, the initiative aims to systematically identify, engage, and integrate Nigerian athletes abroad who are eligible and eager to represent the country.
The commission believes the move will significantly deepen Nigeria’s competitive pool across multiple sports, particularly in disciplines where diaspora athletes already excel internationally.
Olopade noted that Adelakun’s extensive connections within the global sports ecosystem position him to unlock opportunities previously left untapped. “With his rich diaspora network, we are confident of attracting thousands of our sons and daughters who want to represent Nigeria with pride and dignity,” he added.
Reacting to his appointment, Adelakun described the initiative as a potential game-changer for Nigerian sports. “This is about adopting international best practices to build a seamless pathway for Nigerian talent everywhere,” he said.
“There are many Nigerians in the diaspora willing to compete for the country. Our responsibility is to create a credible, welcoming platform that makes that decision easy and meaningful.”
Industry watchers see the committee as a timely intervention that aligns Nigeria with global trends, where countries aggressively court diaspora athletes to boost competitiveness. If effectively executed, the NSC’s latest move could redefine talent discovery and set Nigeria on a faster track to consistent international success.
