The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 reaches a decisive stage on Thursday, 9 January, with two heavyweight quarter-final clashes set to ignite Tangier and Rabat.
A fierce West African derby between Senegal and Mali takes centre stage, while hosts Morocco face a daunting examination against five-time champions Cameroon.

Senegal vs Mali: Familiar Foes Renew Rivalry in Tangier
Senegal and Mali will lock horns at the Grande Stade de Tanger in a highly anticipated quarter-final showdown, with kick-off scheduled for 17:00 local time (16:00 GMT).
It will be only the second time the two neighbours meet at AFCON finals, their previous encounter coming in the 2004 group stage, a 1-1 draw in Tunisia.
However, the broader rivalry is far richer: this will be the 41st meeting between the sides, with Senegal holding a clear historical advantage, boasting 19 wins to Mali’s eight, alongside 13 draws.
Senegal arrive in Tangier full of confidence. The reigning African champions are unbeaten in their last 15 AFCON matches and have scored in each of their four games at the current tournament.
They have also enjoyed a long-standing dominance over Mali, remaining unbeaten in their last 13 encounters (six wins, seven draws).
Mali’s route to the last eight has been dramatic rather than dominant. The Eagles are yet to win a match in open play at the tournament, drawing all four outings before edging Tunisia on penalties in the Round of 16.
Nonetheless, Mali have developed a reputation for resilience in knockout football and will draw belief from their strong historical record in quarter-finals, having progressed from this stage five times previously.
Key figures are expected to shape the contest. Senegal captain Sadio Mané leads the tournament’s assist charts and continues to influence games decisively, while Mali will look to in-form forward Lassine Sinayoko, whose three goals have underpinned their progress.
With contrasting styles and high stakes, the Tangier clash promises intensity, discipline and fine margins.
Cameroon vs Morocco: Hosts Confront History in Rabat
Later in the evening, hosts Morocco face one of their sternest tests yet when they meet Cameroon at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT).
It is a fixture steeped in AFCON history.
Cameroon are unbeaten against Morocco at AFCON finals, winning two and drawing one of their previous three meetings.
Notably, the Indomitable Lions eliminated the Atlas Lions in the 1988 semi-finals on Moroccan soil, a memory that still lingers for home supporters.
Cameroon, five-time AFCON winners, are renowned for thriving in hostile environments.
They have faced tournament hosts 13 times in AFCON history, recording six wins, five draws and just two defeats.
Crucially, they are unbeaten in their last six matches against host nations and have eliminated hosts on multiple occasions in knockout rounds.
Morocco, however, enter the contest with momentum and belief. Walid Regragui’s side have won three matches at the tournament, kept three clean sheets and dominated possession statistics.
Brahim Díaz has been the standout performer, scoring four goals to set a new Moroccan record for a single AFCON edition.
Cameroon, by contrast, have embraced a more pragmatic approach, conceding possession but remaining ruthlessly efficient.
Their Round of 16 victory over South Africa underlined their trademark resilience and knockout pedigree.
For Morocco, this match represents a defining moment in their quest to lift the AFCON trophy on home soil for the first time since 1976.
For Cameroon, it is another opportunity to assert their enduring authority on Africa’s biggest stage.
