Tunisia Cruise Past Uganda 3–1 To Open AFCON 2025 Campaign

Tunisia began their TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 campaign in convincing fashion with a 3–1 victory over Uganda, topping Group C on opening day following Nigeria’s 2–1 win against Tanzania.

The North Africans asserted their dominance early in the contest, taking control of possession and tempo while converting their superiority into goals at key moments.

Tunisia opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Ellyes Skhiri, who finished off a well-worked move assisted by Hannibal Mejbri. The goal was historic, as it made Tunisia the sixth nation to reach 100 goals in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Uganda responded with resilience and managed to threaten on the counter, with Denis Omedi seeing his effort deflected past the goalkeeper in a rare attacking moment, though it did not alter the scoreline at that stage.

Tunisia doubled their advantage in the 40th minute when Elias Achouri struck with a composed right-footed finish after a clever assist from Ali Abdi, sending the Carthage Eagles into halftime with a comfortable 2–0 lead.

Achouri continued his impressive display after the interval, adding his second of the night in the 64th minute. The winger tapped into an empty net to make it 3–0, effectively putting the contest beyond Uganda’s reach.

Uganda managed a late consolation in stoppage time when Denis Omedi once again found the net in the 90+2 minute, his right-footed effort taking a deflection on its way past the Tunisian goalkeeper. Despite the late setback, Tunisia remained composed to see out the game and secure all three points.

Group C Takes Shape

The win places Tunisia top of Group C, level on points with Nigeria but ahead on goal difference after the Super Eagles’ 2–1 victory over Tanzania earlier in the day.

Tunisia will now look to build on this strong opening performance as the group stage continues, while Uganda will aim to regroup ahead of their next fixture.
