CAFCL Qualifier: Chaos in Abeokuta! MC Alger Fans Destroy Stadium Seats, Force Gate Open After 2-0 Defeat to Rangers

Ugly scenes reportedly unfolded at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Abeokuta, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, as sections of MC Alger’s travelling supporters destroyed stadium seats and forced open an exit gate following their team’s 2-0 defeat to Rangers International in the CAF Champions League.

The incidents reportedly occurred after a fiercely contested first-leg encounter in the second preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League, which saw the Nigerian champions secure a valuable advantage ahead of the return fixture in Algeria.

MC Alger had arrived in Abeokuta accompanied by approximately 400 supporters who travelled from Algeria to back their team in the continental showdown.

However, what began as an important football occasion reportedly ended in disorder after the visitors conceded two late goals. Some members of the travelling contingent damaged the stadium chairs and forced open an exit gate as tensions escalated following the final whistle.

The disturbances reportedly extended to the stadium tunnel, where the MC Alger head coach was said to have encountered hostility from sections of his team’s supporters.

The situation became sufficiently tense for the Algerian coach to be escorted away from the stadium. The reported confrontation raised concerns about the safety of players, coaches and match officials during high-pressure continental fixtures.

Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the coach’s departure and any intervention by stadium security personnel remain unclear.

The disturbances followed an eventful encounter in which Rangers International overcame an early numerical disadvantage to claim a memorable victory. The Flying Antelopes were reduced to 10 men in the 13th minute but maintained their composure against the Algerian champions.

MC Alger also had a player dismissed in the 52nd minute, with the incident reportedly causing a delay after the player initially refused to leave the pitch. An MC Alger official was subsequently sent off in the 70th minute as tensions continued to rise.

Rangers eventually broke the deadlock through an 83rd-minute penalty before James Emo doubled the advantage in the 87th minute. The 2-0 victory handed the Nigerian champions a significant first-leg lead ahead of their trip to Algeria.

With Rangers scheduled to travel to Algeria for the return leg on October 23, the events in Abeokuta could place additional focus on arrangements for the safety of both teams and their supporters.

Any disciplinary action would depend on official reports and subsequent decisions by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

For now, the alleged destruction of stadium property and confrontation involving MC Alger’s travelling supporters remain matters requiring further clarification.

While Rangers International celebrated an important continental victory, the reported scenes of disorder threatened to overshadow what should have been a memorable evening of African club football in Abeokuta.
