Troost-Ekong captained Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles claimed the silver medal after a closely contested 2–1 loss to host nation Côte d’Ivoire.

In recognition of the team’s courageous outing and dedication to national service, President Tinubu bestowed national honours on members of the squad and officials.

The retired defender was awarded the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

He disclosed that his official certificate arrived a day after the honours were announced in Fez, Morocco, where the Super Eagles are currently camped ahead of the 2025 AFCON.

Having recently bowed out of international football, Troost-Ekong took to social media to reflect on the honour, describing it as a deeply emotional and proud moment for both himself and his family.

“I am truly honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for conferring on me the MFR national honour,” he wrote.

“I received the official certificate today, following last night’s announcement. It is a moment of immense pride for me and my family.”

Looking back on his international journey, the former captain spoke movingly about Nigeria’s impact on his life, crediting the country for shaping his identity, values and football career.

“Nigeria gave me my identity, my purpose, and the opportunity to live my dream through football,” Troost-Ekong said.

“Wearing the green and white has always been a privilege and a responsibility — a promise to give everything for the badge and for our people.”

He also extended words of encouragement to the Super Eagles as they commence their AFCON campaign, pledging his continued support and belief in the team.

“As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish them the very best. As promised, I will be supporting them all the way,” he added.

“I believe in this team, in our country, and in what we can achieve together.”

Troost-Ekong concluded his message with a resounding affirmation of pride and patriotism: “I am, and will always remain, proud to be Nigerian.”
