Fulham of England defender, Calvin Bassey has opined that the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles, deserve something better with the quality of players available to the squad, Sports247 reports.
Bassey, whose birthday is on December 31st and previously played for Leicester City, Rangers of Scotland, as well as Ajax of Netherlands, believes the Eagles have what it takes to rule Africa.
His verdict came ahead of their first match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Bassey, who was born in Italy, reckons that Nigeria should rank among favourites to win the cup at the start of 2026.
“It’s a really amazing group of players. The quality we have here definitely deserves something big. We just have to try and make sure we perform at a consistently high level,” he acknowledged.
Bassey also admitted that failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was a huge setback for the Super Eagles, but the barrel-chested left-footed centre back affirmed that they are in Morocco to make up for what they missed last month.
“I can’t explain what happened in the World Cup qualifiers, but we’ve learnt from it, and we’re now looking at how we can win this one,” said Bassey, who has one goal in 37 international appearances.
