The Super Eagles of Nigeria have begun preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cairo, with goalkeeper Francis Uzoho becoming the first player to arrive.
Uzoho touch down in Cairo in the early hours of Sunday, December 14 and check in quickly into the team’s base at the Renaissance Hotel, where the coaching crew and backroom staff are already settled.
The shot-stopper is back in the Super Eagles fold for the first time in several months as the fight for starting role at AFCON begins..
Uzoho last featured for Nigeria during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, held in early 2024, where he made a brief substitute appearance.
He has not been around the national team since March 2024 when was an unused substitute in the international friendly against Mali.
With Nigeria set to face Egypt in the pre-AFCON test, the match is expected to play a key role in assessing the players readiness as well as the goalkeeping department where Uzoho looks to stake a strong claim for the number one jersey.
Three-time African champions, the Super Eagles are targeting a fourth continental crown.
The Super Eagles have been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda, and will open their campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23.
More players are expected to join the camp in the coming days as preparations gather pace as the coaching crew led by Eric Sekou Chelle will finalise his strategies and winning formula for a successful outing.
