The Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has described the African Union’s decision to grant Nigeria the hosting rights for the 6th Specialized Technical Committee (STC) Meeting of the African Union Sports Council in 2027 as a major vote of confidence in the country’s sports leadership and continental relevance.
Speaking from the perspective of the Commission’s chief administrator, Olopade said the approval reflects years of deliberate engagement, reform-driven governance, and Nigeria’s renewed commitment to using sports as a strategic tool for youth development and cultural integration across Africa.

“This is a proud moment for Nigeria and for us at the National Sports Commission,” Olopade stated. “The African Union’s decision shows that our efforts, reforms, and vision for sports development are being recognised at the highest continental level.”
The hosting rights were approved during the African Union Meeting of Ministers in Bujumbura, Burundi, following a detailed presentation by the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, who highlighted Nigeria’s achievements, institutional reforms, and readiness to host a high-level continental policy meeting.
According to Olopade, hosting the STC Meeting goes beyond prestige, as it places Nigeria at the centre of key policy conversations on sports, youth empowerment, and culture in Africa.
“This meeting is one of the most important technical platforms of the African Union. It shapes policy direction, strengthens cooperation among member states, and reinforces the role of sports as a driver of economic growth, social cohesion, and youth empowerment,” he said.
The DG assured that the NSC will work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure Nigeria delivers a world-class event that reflects professionalism, inclusiveness, and continental unity.
“We see this responsibility as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s capacity, leadership, and commitment to Africa’s collective progress. Nigeria will host with excellence,” Olopade affirmed.
The 2027 STC Meeting will bring together Ministers and Directors in charge of Sports, Youth, and Culture from across AU member states, further cementing Nigeria’s position as a key player in Africa’s sports and development agenda.
