The President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), Mr. Jibril Saidu Ojih, has expressed profound sympathy to Benue Buffaloes after players and officials of the club were kidnapped on their return from the Ardova Handball Premier League 2025 Phase 2 in Lagos.
The team, which placed ninth in the just-concluded league, was abducted by armed men along the Otukpo axis of Benue State on their journey back home.
They were later rescued following a rapid intervention by troops of the Nigerian Army, preventing the ordeal from escalating further.
In a statement released on Monday, Mr. Jibril described the incident as “a sad and heartbreaking ordeal” no athlete or official should ever encounter.
“I extend my deepest sympathy to the entire Benue Buffaloes team. What they went through is unimaginable.
No sports person should be subjected to such trauma. We thank God and the Nigeria Army for their safe rescue,” he said.
The HFN President also extended condolences to the Benue State Sports Ministry, noting the severe emotional and psychological impact on the broader sports community in the state.
“Our hearts go out to the Benue State Sports Ministry. The board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria and the entire Nigeria handball family is with you in this trying moment. You are not alone,” he added.
Mr. Jibril commended the Nigerian Army for its prompt response, emphasizing that the swift action prevented a potentially more devastating outcome.
He also urged authorities to strengthen security measures for travelling sports teams nationwide, stressing that athlete safety must remain a priority.
Reaffirming the federation’s commitment, he assured that the HFN will stand firmly by Benue Buffaloes as they recover from the traumatic experience.
“We will ensure they receive the support they need as they heal and prepare for future competitions,” he assured.
The incident has renewed calls for enhanced safety protocols for sports contingents travelling across the country, as the handball community rallies around the affected team.
