Iwobi Reacts to Troost-Ekong’s Shock Super Eagles Retirement Before AFCON

Troost-Ekong, who was named in Nigeria’s 54-man provisional squad for the tournament, confirmed his retirement just weeks before the competition kicks off.

The 32-year-old former Super Eagles captain made 83 appearances for Nigeria before drawing the curtain on his international career.

Speaking to SportyTV’s Kelechi, Iwobi expressed sadness over the development, noting that Troost-Ekong’s influence extended beyond his on-field contributions.

“Obviously, it is a sad one for us because he is a big part of our team. But at the end of the day, I wish him well. He is a brother. He has helped Nigeria and he has helped me,” Iwobi said.

The midfielder added that Troost-Ekong’s next chapter is one the entire team hopes will be successful: “I just hope that the next chapter he has in life goes well for him, and we will all support him.”

While addressing whether the former captain’s exit would leave a major vacuum, Iwobi acknowledged that Troost-Ekong saw reduced playing time toward the end of his international career, but stressed that his leadership remained invaluable.

“Of course, towards the end of his Nigerian career he wasn’t playing as much as probably he would like, but he was still a big part of our team.

His voice, the way he was leading us, and the way he made sure the togetherness in the team was very high and very strong,” he stated.

Iwobi further described Troost-Ekong as an exemplary leader whose absence will be felt in the dressing room.

“He will be very missed. He was a big leader for us. I am sure we have other leaders that can follow in his footsteps, but we all wish him well,” he added.

As one of the senior players in the current squad, Iwobi also spoke about embracing greater leadership responsibilities as Nigeria prepares for AFCON.

“God willing I stay fit. I will be there representing in the AFCON and we will be fine for Nigeria and Will as well. He will be there in spirit,” he assured.

Nigeria will compete in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The Super Eagles open their campaign on December 23 against Tanzania, face Tunisia on December 27, and conclude the group stage against Uganda on December 30.
