Akpom, 29, who was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents, has long been eligible for Nigeria but had previously represented England at various youth levels. Despite standout campaigns at Middlesbrough, where he finished as the Championship’s top scorer, and a promising spell with Ajax, the forward has yet to receive a senior international invitation from either England or Nigeria.

The former Arsenal forward disclosed that he has secured his Nigerian passport, a major step towards a long-expected switch of allegiance. According to him, his representative has been in active communication with the new Super Eagles technical crew.

“My agent has been in contact with the manager. They’ve always liked me. If I was to get called up, it would be an honour of course,” Akpom said.

With the Super Eagles seeking to inject fresh firepower into the attack ahead of crucial qualifiers and major tournament preparations, Akpom’s renewed commitment comes at an ideal time. His versatility—capable of playing as a central striker or attacking midfielder—could offer Chelle an additional dimension in a squad already rich in attacking talent.

As talks progress behind the scenes, all eyes will be on whether the Nigerian Football Federation moves quickly to secure Akpom’s long-awaited debut, potentially ending years of speculation surrounding his international future
