In another bold step toward redefining grassroots sports development in Edo State, the EYOTO Sports Academy Championship has officially added Rugby to the list of sporting events to be contested at its highly anticipated 6th edition, scheduled for 8th – 10th December 2025 in Benin City.
The announcement, made by Obong Ntiense Williams, Head Coach of the Edo State Rugby Association, marks a new chapter in the Championship’s fast-growing reputation as one of Edo’s most dynamic school sports platforms.

For the first time, students will compete in Athletics and Rugby as part of the annual showcase, an expansion that reflects EYOTO’s vision to broaden athletic opportunities and nurture multi-talented young athletes.
According to Coach Williams, Rugby trials will hold on Wednesday, 10th December 2025, from 9:00am to 4:00pm at Edo Boys High School, Adolor. Participation has been capped at eight schools, four boys’ schools and four girls’ schools, with allocation strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. Schools have been urged to confirm their participation immediately due to the limited number of available slots.
This development aligns seamlessly with EYOTO’s growing influence in school sports across the region. Over the years, the Championship has become a springboard for emerging talents, with notable success stories. The event has also continued to attract and celebrate legendary figures like Maria Osifo, who recently presented medals to young athletes in Benin, inspiring the next generation of champions.
The addition of Rugby underscores EYOTO’s commitment not only to athletics but to building versatile athletes capable of thriving across multiple sporting disciplines. It also strengthens Edo State’s position as a growing hub for youth sports development, where structured competitions, expert coaching, and international exposure are now becoming the norm.
As preparations intensify ahead of the December Championship, excitement is already building among schools, coaches, and students across the state
