Qatar-based Coach David Okunlola Urges Nigeria’s Corporate Bodies, Philantropists To Support Grassroots Football Teams

A Nigerian coach based in Qatar, David Okunlola has called on corporate bodies and philanthropists to promote grassroots football by sponsoring various developmental programmes in Africa’s most populous country.

Okunlola, who made a lot of giant strides during his days as the technical director at Lagos Tigers FC of Ibeji-Lekki, recounted in a chat with Sports247 that he had to put in a lot of personal effort and money to achieve great things with the team.

The exuberant youth promoter, who now trains kids at Absolute Sports Academy in Doha, Qatar, pointed out that he would have achieved more had their been additional financial support from companies and rich individuals in the community.

He recalled, “During my days at Lagos Tigers, I was able to guide the team with the support of my coaches to win Islanders U9 Cup in 2023, as well as clinch bronze and silver medals at the Youth Champions Cup in 2024.

“We achieved a lot during my time there, but I am sure it would have been much easier, and with more records to show, if we had corporate support to complement our efforts.”

Okunlola then disclosed that he is currently working hard to create a huge impact in Qatar, hence his decision to embark on another course, towards adding more qualifications to his academic and coaching profiles.

He added, “I am currently studying for my UEFA C-coaching license. That’s because my goal is to continue with my coaching education up to pro level.

“In the process, I aim to develop great players who will end up playing for top clubs in the major European leagues and all over the world. I also want to help young players in Qatar and Nigeria to further develop their tactical understanding.

“Additionally, I want to be in a strong position to improve the academy’s competitive structure and lead the team into big tournaments. I want to build a progressive team while enhancing individual player growth and confidence.”

The youthful tactician, who also has BSc and MSc degrees in sports related courses, which he acquired during his days in Nigeria, concluded with a declaration that the country’s records in youth football have been stunted due to lack of support for coaches, players and teams.

Okunlola stressed, “Grassroots football thrives on support. Your investment in youth development creates opportunities, transforms lives, and strengthens communities.

“Partnering with football academies helps young players realise their potential and provides them with a positive pathway in sports and education.

“That’s why we should all continue expanding support for grassroots football players, teams, coaching, infrastructure, youth competitions and education.

‘Strengthening pathways from grassroots to elite levels will ensure more talented Nigerian youths are discovered, developed and supported to succeed locally and internationally.”
