Motsepe Challenges Africa: ‘Invest or Be Left Behind — World Cup is Within Our Reach’

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has made a bold call for African nations to increase investment in football — asserting that the continent’s young talent now demands the global stage.

Speaking at the recent CAF Awards ceremony, he urged those countries set to represent Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026 to showcase their potential and prove that the time has come for the continent to compete at the highest level.

Motsepe highlighted the historic breakthrough of Morocco national football team, which reached the semi-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 — a milestone he said should serve as a springboard, not a ceiling. “Morocco’s run showed what is possible and now we must aim higher for 2026,” he said.

The CAF president called upon national federations to channel resources into youth development, infrastructure and coaching, stating that Africa’s next generation are ready and capable. He emphasised that the investment isn’t just about money — it’s about vision, commitment and enabling the continent’s boys to realise their talent on the world stage.

“Football unites Africa, lifts communities and builds futures,” Motsepe added. “The world is watching — the 2026 World Cup is our chance to show that Africa not only belongs but can win.”

With Africa set to increase its presence at major tournaments, Motsepe’s message is clear: stop treating youth and talent as auxiliary, start investing like you mean business — and produce results that reflect the continent’s promise.
