Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has applauded the outstanding performance of Nigerian athletes at the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, describing their display as nothing short of inspiring.

Speaking on Team Nigeria’s showing so far, Olopade said many of the athletes — particularly those competing in their first major international championship — have gone beyond expectations, proving that the country’s developmental efforts are beginning to bear fruit.

“These young athletes have exceeded all projections,” he said warmly, commending their bravery and competitive spirit on a stage unfamiliar to many of them.

Olopade further praised the commitment and patriotism of the competitors, highlighting the fact that the Games fall outside the athletes’ regular season — a period when many would typically be resting, training privately, or preparing for upcoming domestic and international events.

Despite the timing, he said the athletes showed remarkable dedication by choosing to represent the country, a sacrifice he believes speaks volumes about their character and desire to grow.

“They didn’t have to be here, but they came, they fought, and they made Nigeria proud,” Olopade noted.

The Director General hailed their discipline, resilience and hunger for success, stressing that their achievements in Riyadh are proof that Nigeria’s sporting future is bright. He added that their performances should motivate the nation to invest even more in emerging athletes, as early exposure to international competition is crucial for long-term development.

With Nigeria steadily climbing the medals table, Olopade expressed optimism that the team’s success at the Islamic Solidarity Games will inspire a new wave of confidence and ambition among homegrown talents across all sporting disciplines.
