Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has called on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to raise his performance level and improve his coordination with the defence as Nigeria prepares for the 2026 World Cup playoff matches.
Adepoju, speaking after the team’s qualification for the playoff stage, expressed concern over Nwabali’s recent lapses in concentration, warning that such mistakes could prove costly in high-stakes encounters.

“We’ve seen some scary moments in the last two games,” Adepoju said. “Nwabali needs to be sharper — his communication with the backline must be stronger because at this level, even a small error can change everything.”
The former Real Sociedad star emphasised that the goalkeeper’s leadership and composure will be vital as Nigeria faces top continental opponents.
“He’s a good goalkeeper, no doubt,” Adepoju continued. “But football doesn’t remember what you did yesterday — it’s about the next game. He needs to show that same hunger and focus we saw during the AFCON.”
Adepoju concluded by urging the coaching staff to help Nwabali regain confidence and rhythm ahead of the playoff battles, noting that a strong and coordinated defence will be key to Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes.
