Flying Eagles captain Daniel Bameyi has expressed deep disappointment following Nigeria’s crushing 4–0 loss to Argentina in the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, admitting that the players are “heartbroken” and that the result is not a true reflection of their effort throughout the competition.
Speaking after the match, Bameyi said the team went into the clash full of confidence but were undone by an early goal that completely changed the momentum. “It was a tough game from the start,” he said.

“That early goal affected us a lot. We tried to recover, but things didn’t go as planned. Everyone is disappointed — the players, the coaches, even the fans who believed in us.”
The Flying Eagles struggled to match Argentina’s pace and tactical organization. Goals from Alejo Sarco, Maher Carrizo (twice), and Mateo Silvetti condemned the Nigerian side to a painful exit from the tournament. Bameyi, who has captained the team with pride throughout the competition, admitted that the experience was a harsh lesson.
“This is football — sometimes it’s your day, sometimes it’s not,” he reflected. “We gave our all, but it wasn’t enough against a very good team. It hurts, but we must accept it and move on. The most important thing is to learn from it and come back stronger.”
Despite the disappointment, Bameyi praised his teammates for their commitment and unity throughout the campaign. “We fought together, we lost together. That’s football. We’ll go back home and see what the future holds for each of us,” he said.
The defeat ends Nigeria’s hopes of a deep run in the tournament and adds to a growing list of underwhelming performances at youth level. For Bameyi and his teammates, it’s a painful reminder that potential must be matched with consistency and hunger.
