Former Flying Eagles captain Ikouwem Udoh has backed Nigeria’s U-20 side to overcome Argentina in their FIFA U-20 World Cup Round of 16 clash in Chile. Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated encounter, Udoh expressed belief in the team’s quality and mental strength, saying they have what it takes to make history.
According to Udoh, the team’s earlier setback in the opening group game served as a wake-up call, putting the players on high alert to give their all in subsequent matches.

“The loss in the first match was painful, but it helped the boys realize that every opponent at this stage is strong,” he said. “I believe they’ve learned from that and will approach Argentina with full seriousness.”
Udoh, who captained the Flying Eagles during his playing days, emphasized that the team must remain disciplined and take their chances, as any slip could result in elimination. “This is knockout football—there’s no second chance. The players must stay focused, defend well, and make every opportunity count,” he added.
He also praised head coach Aliyu Zubairu for instilling fighting spirit and tactical awareness in the team, noting that Nigeria’s ability to bounce back after a difficult start shows their resilience. Udoh expressed optimism that the current squad could go further than the class of 2005, who reached the final against Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
With millions of Nigerians eagerly anticipating the showdown, Udoh urged the Flying Eagles to play with passion and belief, reminding them that they carry the hopes of the nation. “They’ve got the talent and character to beat Argentina. It’s all about mentality now,” he concluded.
Nigeria will face Argentina in Santiago later today, with a place in the quarterfinals up for grabs and national pride on the line.
