Oyedeji Praises Dolphins Women as Focus Shifts to Continental Stage

President of Dolphins Women Basketball Team, Olumide Oyedeji, has expressed pride in his players after they emerged champions of the Nigeria Women’s Basketball League for the first time in ten years, while also declaring that attention has now shifted to the continental stage.

The Lagos-based side secured the title in style, marking a historic achievement that ended a decade-long wait, and they will now represent Nigeria at the Zonal Qualifiers of the Africa Women Basketball League (AWBL).

Speaking after the triumph, Oyedeji, a former D’Tigers captain and one of Nigeria’s most experienced basketball figures, described the victory as a reward for the team’s resilience and hard work.

“This is a proud moment for the club and for Nigerian basketball,” he said. “Winning the league after so many years shows the character of the players and the dedication of the coaching staff. They gave everything, and this title is well deserved.”

Oyedeji explained that while celebrations are ongoing, the bigger task lies ahead as Dolphins prepare to represent the country at continental level.

He stressed that the club must now raise its standards even higher in order to compete against Africa’s best. “Winning the league is only the beginning,” he noted.

“We now have to focus on the AWBL Zonal Qualifiers. The goal is to do well on the continent and make Nigeria proud once again.”

He further assured that the club’s management will give the players all the support they need, promising adequate preparation, welfare, and encouragement.

According to him, participation at the continental stage is not just about the club but about Nigerian basketball as a whole. “This is about flying the national flag. We will prepare well because we know the responsibility we carry,” he added.

Oyedeji also used the opportunity to thank fans for their support, urging them to stand by the team as they step into the next chapter. “This title is for them as well. With their continued encouragement, we believe the best is yet to come,” he concluded.
