Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has called for unity within South African football as the national team prepares for the final round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Broos’ appeal comes in the wake of the controversy surrounding the recent points deduction that left South Africa’s qualification campaign hanging in the balance.
While the setback has sparked a wave of criticism and finger-pointing across the country’s football circles, the Belgian tactician insists that the focus should remain firmly on the opportunity still ahead.

Speaking during a press conference in Johannesburg where he announced his squad for the decisive fixtures, Broos urged stakeholders, fans, and the players themselves to stop trading blame and instead rally behind the national cause.
“There’s still a World Cup ticket to fight for,” the veteran coach said. “Instead of arguing about who is at fault for the points deduction, we must look forward. The players need support, not distraction, because the dream of qualification is still alive.”
Broos acknowledged the frustration felt by supporters after seeing Bafana’s strong start undermined by the disciplinary ruling, but stressed that the team has the quality to recover. According to him, the situation requires calm heads, determination, and collective responsibility.
“Almost everyone connected to the team shares responsibility,” he admitted. “That is why pointing fingers will not help us now. What matters is how we respond in the next matches.”
The South African coach, who guided Cameroon to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title before taking over Bafana Bafana, emphasized that his squad has already shown signs of progress and must now channel that momentum into results on the pitch.
“We still have a bright chance of qualifying,” Broos concluded. “It is in our hands, and with unity and focus, we can make it happen.”
