Okoronkwo Handed Penalty Duties At AFC Toronto Ahead Of Playoffs

AFC Toronto head coach, Marko Milanovic, has confirmed Nigerian striker Esther Okoronkwo as the club’s new penalty taker following her successful conversion in their recent league game.

Milanovic explained that the decision was based on Okoronkwo’s composure and accuracy from the spot, which the team first noticed during her performances at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

“Esther has shown great confidence and consistency from the penalty spot,” Milanovic said. “We saw it at WAFCON, and when she stepped up for us last week, she delivered with calmness. That is why we made the decision to trust her with the responsibility going forward.”

Okoronkwo’s goal came at a crucial time in the match, helping Toronto secure vital points as they push for playoff qualification. Her new role adds extra responsibility, but Milanovic is confident she will handle it well. “She is a player who thrives under pressure,” the coach noted. “Having someone reliable in those moments is a big advantage for us as the playoffs approach.”

The Nigerian forward also expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in her. “It feels good that the coach and my teammates believe in me,” Okoronkwo said. “For me, every penalty is about focus and composure. I will keep working hard to make sure I don’t let the team down.”

She promised to continue giving her best for the club. “We are entering the most important stage of the season, and all of us must stay committed. I will do my part, whether from open play or set pieces, to help the team succeed,” she added.

AFC Toronto currently sit in a strong position to qualify for the playoffs, and with Okoronkwo leading the line, Milanovic believes the team has what it takes to make a deep run
