As varied reactions continue trailing the poor run of results that is currently holding back Nigeria’s national squad, Super Eagles in the FIFA 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a former defender in the side, Eric Ejiofor has opined that it is because they no longer play as a team.
Sports247 reports that Ejiofor is also of a view that the current array of players in the Eagles are not committed to the national team, as they arrive late to camp, thereby failing to meet up with the necessary levels of togetherness needed at this stage of the round leather game.

He further argued that, even if officials of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) fail to get things right in terms of administration, the players should take the bull by the horn themselves and ensure that they qualify for the World Cup for the sake of their careers.
The former centre back, who was born in Asaba, Delta State but made his marks with Katsina United, Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Enyimba of Aba in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), added: “They don’t really understand what it takes to play in the World Cup, which is so sad.
“It’s very sad, because the attitude of these players towards their games shows no synergy and no energy in them. Even if the administrators are not getting it right, the players must think about their future.”
Ejiofor, who also played for Maccabi Haifa and SC Ashdod of Israel at the height of his career, further pointed out that inadequate blending is a problem in the current Eagles’ squad due to their inability to have enough training sessions together.
He stressed with sarcasm in his voice, “Let’s remove the aspect of the NFF. The players have to worry about their careers. But, what are they doing about trying to win their matches?
“You can imagine the attitude of coming late to camp. Some enter camp to train just twice before a match, and yet they want to win. It’s not possible! Football is all about teamwork, but we are not playing as a team.”
