Midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic win for the Carthage Eagles, confirming their seventh World Cup appearance and third in succession.

The late winner lifted Tunisia to 22 points from eight matches, mathematically out of reach for second-placed Namibia on 12 points with two fixtures remaining.

Remarkably, Jalel Kadri’s side remain the only African team yet to concede a goal in the qualifiers, boasting an immaculate 13:0 record.

Their discipline was on full display again, with goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen commanding a backline led by Montassar Talbi and Dylan Bronn.

Equatorial Guinea, whose campaign was derailed by earlier FIFA sanctions, resisted bravely and forced Tunisia into defensive mode late on.

However, the defeat leaves them stranded on 10 points from eight matches, now dependent on a strong finish and runners-up ranking to revive qualification hopes.

The day’s biggest shock came in Casablanca, where Algeria were held to a goalless draw by Guinea.

It marked the Fennecs’ first World Cup qualifier without a goal in 37 matches.

They remain top on 19 points but must wait until October to secure their ticket.

Elsewhere, Morocco, the first African side to qualify showcased their strength with a 2-0 victory in Zambia to continue their run of the campaign.

Youssef En-Nesyri opened the scoring with a header inside seven minutes, while Hamza Igamane struck shortly after the restart.

The Atlas Lions now have 21 points, maintaining a dominant 21:2 goal tally across seven straight wins.

Tanzania trail far behind in second with 10 points but retain a game in hand over Zambia and Niger.

In Group G, Mozambique tightened their grip on second place with a 2-0 home win over Botswana.

Witi’s early strike and a second-half finish from Feliciano “Bangal” Jone secured the points, lifting the Mambas to 15 points, three behind leaders Algeria.

Botswana remain on nine points and face an uphill task to stay in contention.

Uganda also kept their campaign alive, defeating Somalia 2-0 in Kira Town through goals from Allan Okello and Jude Ssemugabi.

They now sit level with Mozambique, setting up a pivotal October clash against Algeria.

Tunisia’s defensive perfection and Morocco’s ruthlessness now serve as benchmarks for the continent’s challengers.

The final Matchday 8 matches will be concluded on Tuesday as teams continue to advance their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
