Reflecting the philanthropic vision of former Commonwealth champion, Atanda Musa.
Musa, who now resides in the United States, was one of Africa’s most celebrated players in the 1990s and continues to inspire the sport globally.
The competition features 16 boys and 16 girls, handpicked from the recently concluded Efunkoya Championships, with promising names such as Umar Ayoola and Khadijat Musa among those expected to shine.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Musa explained the motivation behind his initiative.
“My inspiration came from what I witnessed in the US, where former athletes contribute to society. I’m replicating that here in Nigeria to encourage others to support the communities that shaped them.
“Nigeria is rich in sporting talent, and initiatives like this can motivate young athletes to strive harder and aim higher,” he said.
A veteran of international tournaments and coaching stints in Spain and Saudi Arabia before relocating to the US, Musa stressed the importance of discipline, skill development, and academic balance in shaping successful careers.
“This year’s edition will not only reward winners with prize money but also provide educational materials to participants.”
“With schools reopening soon, we decided to support the players with educational resources. Our aim is to build champions both in sports and in education,” Musa added.
Chairman of the Lagos State Table Tennis Association, Tunji Lawal, praised Musa’s efforts, describing the initiative as a blueprint for other former athletes.
“This tournament accelerates the development of young players in the sport. Atanda Musa began his journey here in Lagos before achieving global recognition, and hosting this event where it all started is truly significant,” he said.
