CHAN 2024: Sudan’s Coach Kwesi Appiah Reveals How His Tactics Caged Nigeria’s Eagles-B

Sudan’s Ghanaian coach at the ongoing Championship of African Nations (CHAN 2024), Kwesi Appiah has disclosed how tactical stability helped his side pull off a dramatic 4-0 trouncing of Nigeria’s home-based national team on Tuesday.

Sports247 reports with corporate support from Showtime brand that a match that initially appeared to be going Nigeria’s way, as they dominated play from kick-off and even had the ball in the back of the net, only to be denied by VAR, turned into a huge disaster for Eric Chelle’s CHAN Eagles.

Things appeared to go from bad to worse and worst for Nigeria after the disallowed effort, as Leonard Ngenge first scored an own goal and then clumsily gave away a penalty under no pressure from any opponent, and the Sudanese then wrapped up the win with two early goals in the second half.

In retrospect, Sudan’s gaffer admitted that the Nigerians had the better part of the game for the first 20 minutes, until his players turned things around, which he disclosed was due to their ability to soak pressure when on the receiving end.

“After all the pressure from Nigeria, our first 20 minutes were not the best, but we just tried to stay in control and be stable.

“We did that very well in the first half and when we got back in the second half. We were able to take over the game when we restarted,” said the 65-year-old Appiah.

The result ultimately rules Nigeria out of any chance of reaching the knock-out stage at CHAN 2024, as they lost 1-0 to Senegal in their first game.

The Eagles’ B-squad remain bottom of the table with no point, as Sudan go top on goals difference with four points, while Senegal are second after a 1-1 draw earlier on Tuesday with Nigeria’s last opponent, Congo, who are third with two points.
