As the date for the World Athletics Championships, draws closer the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has finalised details for its National Trials to select athletes who will represent the country.
This cheering development was made public in a statement by the Secretary General of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Israel Inwang.

The National Trials has been scheduled to take place from the 1st to the 3rd of August, 2025 at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Lagos State, South West, Nigeria.
The trials has been put together by the Athletes Federation of Nigeria (AFN) under the leadership of President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, to prepare and select athletes to represent Team Nigeria at the CAA Region 2 African Senior Athletics Championship in Ghana, World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan, Islamic Game as well as to improve National Record.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) will be providing accommodation for all the athletes competing at the Trials, who have met the qualifying standards this year.
Athletes are expected to arrive on July 31, with competition holding across three days, and departure scheduled for August 4.
Top stars expected at the trials include world-record holder and 2022 world champion Tobi Amusan, who is aiming to reclaim her title in the women’s 100m hurdles. Long jumper Ese Brume, rising sprint sensation Tima Godbless, and several foreign-based athletes will also compete.
Shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, 400m hurdler Nathaniel Ezekiel, and sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike are among those expected to light up the trials in the men’s event in a bid to seal a spots on Team Nigeria roster to Tokyo, Japan in September.
Athletes who have already qualified for the World Championships—either through entry standards or their World Athletics ranking—include:

However, Ofili’s participation at the trials will be closely monitored after the huge media speculations about a possible switch of allegiance from Nigeria to Turkey.
