Ikono LG Boss Breaks New Ground with Female Football Team, Sponsors Coaches for International Training

In a bold stride toward grassroots sports development, the Chairman of Ikono Local Government Area, Hon. Otobong Okon Essien, has made headlines by sponsoring four young coaches from her council to attend the 2025 International Coaching Course currently underway in Uyo.

The three-day programme, which kicked off on Monday, July 28, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, features renowned U.S.-based trainer Seth Norton and former Bendel Insurance head coach Monday Odigie as facilitators. The training focuses on modern coaching techniques, youth development, and the role of coaching in community transformation.

Demonstrating hands-on leadership, Hon. Essien was present at the stadium to personally monitor the progress of the Ikono representatives and express her support for capacity-building in sports.

Reliable sources also revealed that Hon. Essien has established the first-ever female football team in Ikono LGA—an unprecedented move in Akwa Ibom State. The initiative has been widely praised as a groundbreaking effort to promote inclusivity, gender equality, and youth engagement through sports.

Observers describe the Ikono LG boss as a visionary leader who is not only investing in sports infrastructure but also championing social development through innovative programs.

Her recent interventions have sparked excitement and optimism among sports stakeholders, particularly in female football circles, where representation has historically been minimal at the grassroots level.

With initiatives like these, Ikono LGA is fast becoming a model for progressive local governance and sports empowerment in Nigeria.
