Paris Saint-Germain of France female team midfielder, Jennifer Onyinyechi Echegini has faulted widespread talk that social media is a major distraction to players in Nigeria’s women’s national team, Super Falcons, who she tagged as ‘Generation Z Girls,’ Sports247 reports.
Speaking against the backdrop of comments raised in several quarters after many of the players made posts on various platforms during the recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Echegini explained that such activity is done only during leisure time, after which they stay focused for each game.

The 24-year-old former Juventus of Italy dazzler, who was born in the Netherlands, opined: “I saw some small (complaining) stuff like this, and I understand what people feel. Like a football player, people want us to focus on the game.
“What I believe is that we all have the same goal. I understand where they are coming from, but I say, just like every other person, there is time to work and another time for you to just have fun with your friends.”
Echejini, who previously played collegiate football in the United States of America with Mississippi State Bulldogs and Florida State Seminoles, concluded by inferring that the Falcons’ squad is full of young girls who have to flow with modern trends, even as they stay committed to their primary duties in football.
“Five minutes on TikTok is not something too far that will stop you from playing your best game. At the end of the day, we’ll continue to have fun.
“At the same time, we are very focused girls, and we’re very passionate. We are young ‘Generation Z’ footballers. Whether we’re on TikTok or SnapChat, we are still focused, and we all have the same zeal,” Echegini reassured critical fans.
Sports247 further reports that, despite her prominent presence on social media, Echegini rose to the occasion when it mattered most, as the former Charlton Athletic, Millwall and Arsenal of England youth team player got the last goal of Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over hosts Morocco during Saturday’s WAFCON 2024 final.
