Mikel Obi Hits Back at Jamie Carragher Over Chelsea Title Claim, Questions His Credibility

Former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has come to the defense of his former club, Chelsea FC, after Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher claimed the team lacks the quality to compete for the Premier League title.

In a strongly worded response, Mikel dismissed Carragher’s comments as irrelevant, questioning the former Liverpool defender’s own legacy in the game and accusing him of using Chelsea’s name to remain relevant in football discourse.

> “Honestly, Jamie Carragher isn’t someone we need to be worried about because his football career hasn’t made any significant impact that people can learn from or admire,” Mikel stated. “People who truly know Chelsea understand exactly what the club is capable of achieving. I think Carragher is just trying to use Chelsea’s name to boost his own relevance.”

Mikel Obi, who won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and several domestic titles with Chelsea, also referenced Carragher’s controversial stance on African football, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

> “This is the same Jamie Carragher who once criticized the Africa Cup of Nations, calling it the worst tournament with no value. That alone shows the kind of mindset he carries, and it’s clear his opinions are not grounded in fairness or respect.”

Carragher has not responded to Mikel’s remarks, but the former Nigerian international’s defense has resonated with Chelsea supporters and African football fans who see the pundit’s past remarks as dismissive.

With Chelsea undergoing a rebuild under a new era, Mikel’s defense adds to the voices urging critics to give the club time to restore its status among the Premier League elite.
