Team Nigeria added another gold medal to their growing tally at the African Junior Athletics Championships, thanks to a resilient performance by the U20 women’s 4x100m relay team.
The quartet of Lucy Nwankwo, Success Oyibu, Anita Enaruna, and Chioma Nweke blazed to victory despite a late team reshuffle that saw a 400m specialist drafted into the lineup.
In a dramatic and tightly contested final, Nigeria held off strong challenges from South Africa and Botswana to clinch the gold medal, with Nweke anchoring the team to a thrilling finish.
Her composed sprint down the final stretch ensured that Nigeria finished first, much to the delight of the cheering crowd at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
The team’s triumph is even more commendable considering the late adjustment, which saw one of the quarter-milers step into the sprint relay setup—an unusual but effective decision that ultimately paid off.
This victory not only reinforces Nigeria’s dominance in the sprints at youth level but also highlights the depth and versatility of the nation’s athletics program.
The gold in the women’s 4x100m relay continues Nigeria’s momentum at the Championships and adds to their growing medal haul.
