Legacy Meets Determination As Audu Emmanuel Claims Silver In Shot Put At African U18 Championships

Nigeria’s medal campaign at the African U18 and U20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta got off to a strong start, thanks to Audu Emmanuel who secured a Silver medal in the U18 men’s Shot Put event.

Emmanuel put up a commendable performance, throwing a distance of 18.61m to clinch second place behind South Africa’s Walter van Rensburg, who won Gold with a mark of 19.04m.

Interestingly, van Rensburg’s victory continues a family tradition of excellence in Shot Put. He follows in the footsteps of his older brother, JL van Rensburg — the reigning World U20 Silver medalist and former African U18 champion, having won the same event in Ndola two years ago.

While the South African extended his family’s dominance in the event, Emmanuel’s performance signals Nigeria’s intent to challenge for podium places and improve its standing on the overall medal table.

His Silver marks a promising start for Team Nigeria in the field events, with many more medal hopefuls yet to compete.
