Bashir Ahmad, who served as Buhari’s social media aide, announced the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “President Muhammadu Buhari is dead. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.” Garba Shehu also confirmed the death in a brief message, noting that Buhari died peacefully surrounded by close family members.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from December 1983 to August 1985, following a coup that overthrew the civilian government of Shehu Shagari. He returned to power three decades later as a democratically elected president under the All Progressives Congress (APC), serving from 2015 to 2023.

During his presidency, Buhari was known for his firm anti-corruption stance, a reputation that helped him win the support of millions of Nigerians. His administration also prioritized national security, the fight against Boko Haram, and infrastructure development. However, his tenure was also marked by economic challenges, two recessions, and widespread criticism over human rights and freedom of expression.

Despite the controversies, Buhari maintained a reputation for personal discipline and integrity, earning respect from supporters and international observers alike. His political influence and leadership style left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s modern democratic history.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in accordance with Islamic rites. Meanwhile, tributes have begun pouring in from Nigerian leaders, foreign dignitaries, and citizens, celebrating the life and legacy of a man whose leadership spanned over four decades.
