Report Links Super Eagles Midfielder John Ogu With NPFL Return

Veteran Super Eagles midfielder, John Ogu, is on the verge of making a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) as Rivers United enter advanced talks to secure his services for the 2025–2026 season.

Ogu, 37, is set to follow in the footsteps of fellow internationals like Ahmed Musa, Shehu Abdullahi, and Brown Ideye, who have all recently featured in the domestic league after successful stints abroad.

According to Nigeria League, discussions between the former Atlético Clube de Portugal player and Rivers United are ongoing, with sources close to the club indicating that a deal is expected to be finalized soon.

Ogu began his football journey with Akwa Starlets before featuring for Akwa United and the Flying Sports Academy. His professional career took off in 2006 when he joined Slovenian side Drava Ptuj, where he scored eight goals in 97 appearances over four years.

He later featured in several European leagues, including stints in Portugal, Israel, and Spain, earning a reputation as a reliable and technically gifted midfielder.

In March 2013, Ogu received his first call-up to the Nigerian national team and made his debut in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kenya, coming on as a substitute for the injured Victor Moses. He went on to earn 26 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring once and participating in various international competitions.

Should the move to Rivers United be finalized, it would mark a homecoming for the experienced midfielder, as he looks to bring his wealth of international and club experience to the NPFL.
