Muhammed Abdullahi Rescues Point for Nigeria in Fiery WAFU-B U20 Opener Against Ghana

Muhammed Abdullahi emerged the hero for the Flying Eagles as Nigeria forced a 1-1 draw against bitter rivals Ghana in a tension-filled WAFU-B U20 Boys Tournament opener on Thursday at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, Prampram.

The highly anticipated encounter lived up to expectations, with both sides displaying grit and physicality, fueled by a long-standing rivalry and Ghana’s intent to avenge their defeat to Nigeria in the WAFU AFCON qualifiers.

Ghana struck first through Azis Misbau in the opening half, putting Nigeria on the back foot. But the Flying Eagles, led by coach Aliyu Zubairu, responded with renewed energy after the break, showing improved coordination and attacking urgency.

It was substitute Muhammed Abdullahi who salvaged the draw for Nigeria, nodding home the equalizer in the 84th minute after sustained pressure, ensuring both teams shared the spoils.

Speaking after the match, Zubairu acknowledged the emotional weight of the fixture and commended his players for their response.

β€œThe Ghanaians wanted revenge, and that made the game more physical. But the boys rose to the occasion in the second half and gave a good account of themselves,” he said.

The result leaves the Flying Eagles with work to do in their second Group A match against Benin Republic on Sunday β€” a must-win fixture if they are to stay firmly in the race for a semi-final spot.
