Njikoka Local Government of Anambra State at the weekend emerged winner of the 3rd edition of the Anambra Sports Solution Initiative (ANSSI) for primary and secondary schools that was concluded at the Awka Township Stadium with the state governor, Charles Soludo, doling out millions in prize money to the winners.
The governor, who was present at the finals in the company of some of the state’s commissioners, described the tournament as a successful one while also promising to invest more in the development of kids in the state through sports.
The highlight of the presentation was when the governor, identified with two budding talents within the state, two 7-year-old girls, Chiamaka Moses and Victoria Ejiofor, pupils of Township Primary School, Onitsha, who played Chess and Scrabble, respectively with Moses winning silver in Chess, with the governor giving out N100,000 each for the support of the two pupils.
To emerge as the winner, Njikoka amassed 18 gold, 14 silver, and eight bronze medals for a total of 40 medals, while Awka South finished second with 45 medals: 17 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze medals.
In third position was Nnewi North with a total of 47 medals, albeit with an inferior 16 gold medals compared to the 1st and 2nd. However, Vision High School, Nnewi, won 14 of the 16 gold medals for Nnewi North.
Speaking with journalists, the state governor, Soludo, said his administration was intentional in evolving a virile sports economy while expressing hope that the young lads would rise to become future national and international champions
