Kano Pillars FC attacker, Ahmed Musa, has taken another look at the performances of three African teams at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America and lamented the absence of any outfit from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), Sports247 reports.
Although the continent’s three representatives – Ahly of Egypt, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa – could not go beyond the group stage in the ongoing prestigious competition in God’s Own Country, Musa confessed that he felt jealous seeing them play, while no Nigerian club made it there.
The most capped Nigerian national team player ever, who is still widely regarded as the Super Eagles’ captain, despite missing several recent games, stressed that he has a deep passion for anything that concerns the country’s football.
Musa, who is also Nigeria’s highest goals scorer in FIFA World Cup history, with two goals apiece at Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018, said: “When you see someone that is representing your country, you just have to feel fine.
“For me, I always love my country. So, whenever I see something good coming from another country, I always speak up, because it is what we also want for our country.”
He concluded by suggesting some ways out of the woods, with a view that more private sector investments in the NPFL and enhanced corporate roles for the league will help uplift the round leather game further in the country.
“I think we just need to do more of what we are doing right now … invest more in the sport, let the private sector come in, and let’s see what they can do to make things better,” Musa advocated.
