The British-Nigerian boxing icon was visibly moved by the reception, praising Ghana’s rich culture, warmth, and hospitality.

In a symbolic and unexpected moment during the meeting, President Mahama offered Joshua the opportunity to become a Ghanaian citizen, saying, “If you want us to give you a Ghanaian passport, we will give you.”

The gesture underlines Ghana’s growing cultural diplomacy and Joshua’s status as a global sporting figure of African heritage.

Joshua, who won Olympic gold at London 2012 and holds a professional record of 28 wins and 4 losses, is currently gearing up for his next bout. Potential opponents being considered include rising star Moses Itauma, American heavyweight Jared Anderson, or long-time rival Deontay Wilder.

His visit to Ghana has been met with excitement across the country, with fans and sports stakeholders hailing the moment as a boost for African unity through sports.

The citizenship offer, if accepted, would mark another significant chapter in Joshua’s storied career and further strengthen ties between Ghana and the African diaspora.
