As the nation looks ahead to the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival, Enugu State is stepping confidently into the spotlight, initiating early and strategic preparations to deliver what promises to be a landmark sporting event in 2026.
On Tuesday, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, paid a strategic visit to the Enugu State Government House where he met with the Executive Governor, His Excellency Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
The high-level engagement marked a significant milestone in the planning process for Nigeria’s premier multi-sport competition.

Governor Mbah reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to delivering a world-class festival, positioning the Coal City not only as a hub of athletic excellence but also as a symbol of national unity and youth empowerment.
“We are fully committed to hosting a festival that reflects the true spirit of Nigeria,” the Governor said. “This is more than a sporting event—it is a platform to showcase our unity, talent, and shared future.”
In a major step forward, Governor Mbah approved the composition of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), which is scheduled for formal inauguration on Wednesday. The LOC will be composed of respected professionals with proven expertise in sports administration, youth development, infrastructure delivery, and event management—ensuring a seamless planning and execution process.
Hon. Olopade praised the readiness and vision displayed by Enugu State, describing them as essential ingredients for success.
“The National Sports Festival is not just a competition—it’s a transformational project for host cities,” he said. “Enugu has demonstrated strong political will and strategic foresight, and that gives us confidence in their ability to host a memorable edition.”
Enugu secured the hosting rights for the 23rd National Sports Festival after a keenly contested bidding process, emerging as the preferred destination based on its facilities, commitment, and long-term vision for sports development.
Building on the successes of Gateway Games 2024 held in Ogun State, the 2026 festival is expected to attract thousands of athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators from across the federation, with far-reaching economic, cultural, and developmental benefits.
With preparations already underway and political leadership firmly behind the project, Enugu State is poised to raise the bar and deliver a National Sports Festival that will be remembered for years to come—for its excellence, inclusiveness, and enduring legacy in Nigerian sports.
