NSC Inaugurates High-Powered Election Committees To Uphold Integrity In Sports Federation Polls

Legal Titans, Sports Administrators, and Media Icons to Drive Transparency and Fairness

In a landmark move to fortify the credibility of sports governance in Nigeria, the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) has officially inaugurated two pivotal bodies—the Election Petitions Committee and the Election Appeals Committee—tasked with ensuring transparency, fairness, and integrity in the conduct of upcoming sports federation elections.

The inauguration of the committees marks a strategic shift towards international best practices, with the NSC enlisting a stellar lineup of legal experts, seasoned administrators, and respected media practitioners to oversee and adjudicate electoral disputes.

Election Petitions Committee: Guardians of Electoral Fairness

Heading the Election Petitions Committee is Barrister Denen Ikyaa, a distinguished legal professional and sports ethics authority. Currently serving on the Ethics Committee of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Barr. Ikyaa brings invaluable experience from his past role on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Appeals Committee, where he played a key role in resolving high-stakes electoral disputes.

Other members include:

  • Barrister Chike Onyeacho, a veteran legal practitioner with deep expertise in electoral jurisprudence.
  • Mr. Paul Esheyigba, an astute professional with a solid background in administrative oversight and legal compliance.
  • Mr. Niyi Alabi Aliebiosu, the well-regarded Sports Editor at Nigerian Tribune, whose journalistic integrity and understanding of sports governance dynamics offer a unique perspective.
  • Miss Linda Akalugwa, a dedicated legal professional serving as both member and secretary, tasked with ensuring administrative precision and procedural rigor throughout the committee’s operations.

Election Appeals Committee: A Judicial Powerhouse

Leading the Election Appeals Committee is A.U. Mustapha, SAN, a household name in sports law and arbitration. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria brings a storied career to the role, having chaired the CAF Appeals Committee (2016–2024) and the NFF Electoral Committee in 2010, where his work earned widespread acclaim.

He is joined by:

  • Barrister Chris Umar, SAN, former Solicitor-General of Kaduna State, whose extensive legal and public sector experience enriches the committee’s authority.
  • Barrister Owoicho Adejo-Ogiri, a highly respected international sports law expert and sitting judge at both the FIA International Tribunal and the FIA International Court of Appeal. He is also a former NFF Disciplinary Committee member.
  • Mrs. Prisca Ngozi Udoka, SAN, one of Nigeria’s most accomplished legal minds and a Harvard-trained mediator. Her firm, Perazim Law Partners, has represented top-tier clients in complex contractual and electoral disputes. Notably, she was part of the legal team that won a full term for then-Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State. Her clientele includes First Bank Nigeria Plc and FCMB Plc, underscoring her strategic influence in legal and financial spheres.
  • Mr. Lateef Olatunji Surakatu, the committee’s secretary, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and a CIPFA affiliate. As a Partner at Andersen Nigeria, he commands over two decades of experience in audit, tax, and business advisory. His ethical leadership and commitment to governance make him a key administrative anchor for the committee.

A Commitment to Sports Governance Excellence

By selecting individuals of impeccable integrity, vast experience, and multidisciplinary expertise, the NSC is reinforcing its dedication to restoring and deepening trust in Nigeria’s sports electoral processes. The commission’s bold initiative is widely seen as a step toward aligning the nation’s sports administration with global standards, ultimately fostering an environment of credibility and professionalism.

As Nigeria prepares for crucial sports federation elections, the establishment of these high-caliber committees signals a new era in sports governance—where justice, transparency, and fairness are not just expected, but institutionally guaranteed.
