Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has offered heartfelt words of support to his international teammate Taiwo Awoniyi, who is currently sidelined with an injury.
Drawing from his own recent experience with a long-term back injury, Okoye reflected on the mental and physical toll that comes with such setbacks, but encouraged the Nottingham Forest striker to remain positive and focused.

“Challenges like these are tough, but they also teach you things,” Okoye said. “I went through a difficult time myself. I was operated on, and I couldn’t train for months. But I learned, I grew stronger, and I came back.”
Taiwo Awoniyi has been out of action since early 2025, battling a groin injury that has required a lengthy recovery. The former Union Berlin striker has been a vital presence for Nigeria in recent years, offering strength, mobility, and goals.
His absence has been felt by both club and country, but Okoye believes he will bounce back even stronger, Sports247 reports.
“I know it’s frustrating to sit out while others play, especially when you want to help your team,” Okoye said. “But you have to trust the process. Taiwo is a fighter, and I know he will come back better than ever. My message to him is simple: stay strong and don’t lose focus.”
Awoniyi recently appeared at the City Ground, home of Nottingham Forest, where he received a warm ovation from supporters—an emotional moment that showed how much he is missed.
The Super Eagles continue to build under coach Eric Chelle, with their next game being a high-profile friendly against Russia on June 6. Although Awoniyi will miss the match, his presence and experience remain important to the team spirit.
Okoye concluded, “We’re all rooting for him. Injuries are just part of the journey. What matters most is how you respond—and I believe Taiwo will respond like a champion.
