Hamid Sambo Claims GOLD in 800m with Brilliantly Paced Run at National Sports Festival

Middle-distance runner Hamid Sambo put on a masterclass in race strategy to clinch GOLD in the men’s 800m final at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, clocking a time of 1:51.10.

Coming off a disappointing silver medal finish in the 1500m, where he was narrowly edged out in the final stretch, Sambo returned to the track with renewed determination.

He executed a near-perfect race in the 800m, running consistent splits and displaying a strong finishing kick that left his rivals trailing.

Sambo, who came into the race as the favourite, lived up to expectations with a calm yet commanding performance.

He kept his composure through the first lap, tucked just behind the early leaders, before gradually increasing the tempo with 250m to go.

By the final 100m, he had broken clear of the chasing pack and surged ahead to seal victory in emphatic style.

“This gold means a lot to me,” Sambo said after the race. “After the 1500m, I had to refocus quickly.

I knew the 800m was my strongest event, and I just had to trust my training and stay disciplined with my splits. I’m grateful it all came together.”

His time of 1:51.10 not only earned him top spot on the podium but also confirmed his place as one of the nation’s most promising middle-distance athletes.

The win marks a significant highlight in what has been an impressive campaign for the young runner at this year’s festival.

With eyes now turning toward national trials and potential international competitions, Hamid Sambo’s star continues to rise.

His performance in Abeokuta is sure to be remembered as one of the standout moments of the athletics programme at this year’s Games.
