Madugu Champions Homegrown Talent As Super Falcons Camp Opens For Cameroon Friendlies

As the Super Falcons assemble for their upcoming friendlies against Cameroon, interim head coach Justin Madugu has emphasized the importance of integrating both foreign-based and domestic players to build a formidable and competitive team.

“We are simply trying to open the door for new players to gain international exposure,” Madugu stated, highlighting the strategic inclusion of home-based talents alongside their overseas counterparts.

The 23-player squad, announced ahead of the doubleheader against the Indomitable Lionesses, reflects this balanced approach. The team will face Cameroon on Saturday, May 31, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, followed by a second leg on Tuesday, June 3, at the newly renovated MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

Madugu, who took over the reins of the nine-time African champions in September 2024, has been vocal about his vision to rebuild the Super Falcons by providing opportunities for emerging talents.

“We need to also give others a chance to really see what they can also do,” he explained, addressing the omission of seasoned players like Asisat Oshoala from the current squad.

The coach’s strategy aims not only to strengthen the team’s depth but also to shine a spotlight on the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL), encouraging healthy competition and motivating more players to aspire for national team selection.

As the Super Falcons gear up for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco this July, these friendlies serve as a critical assessment platform. Madugu emphasized the significance of these matches, stating, “You will be able to assess the players and see who fits into what you really want as you continue to prepare and get closer to the competition.”

With camp opening on Monday, May 26, at Am2pm Hotel in Ijebu-Ode, the blend of experience and youth in the squad underscores Madugu’s commitment to building a resilient and competitive team poised to reclaim continental glory.
