NSF Venue Decisions Not Political, Says Ogun Sports Commissioner

The Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, has dismissed allegations of political bias in the exclusion of the Yewa region from hosting major events of the forthcoming National Sports Festival (NSF).

He clarified that the decision-making process is entirely under the purview of the Federal Government.

Speaking during a press conference held at the June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto, Abeokuta, on Saturday, Hon. Isiaka emphasized that the NSF is a national event coordinated by the Federal Government, and not a state-led initiative.

“The exclusion of Yewa or Ogun West is not a political move. This is a Federal Government event, and they determine the venues based on technical and logistical factors,” he explained.

He added that while Ogun State presented all available sports facilities for consideration, the final decision on venue selection lies with the Federal Government. “You can only showcase your infrastructure. The federal authorities make the ultimate decision,” he noted.

Addressing ongoing infrastructure efforts, the Commissioner highlighted the state’s commitment to developing and maximizing sports facilities. He cited the ongoing transformation of the once-neglected swimming pool section into a functional space, with plans for designated areas for sports, recreation, and social activities.

Isiaka also mentioned that Ogun State currently has four stadia — two in Abeokuta, one in Ijebu Ode, and one in Sagamu — with a fifth one being considered for development. He stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in sustaining these facilities, as government alone cannot manage them all effectively.

“To ensure long-term use and maintenance, we’re exploring private sector involvement,” he said.

On the management of technical facilities like swimming pools, he assured that professionals would be engaged to ensure their durability and functionality. “We’ve invested significantly and we’re determined to maintain all our facilities to get maximum value,” he affirmed.

In terms of talent development, the Commissioner reiterated that Ogun State is committed to nurturing athletes beyond mere discovery. “We identify talent, train, and support them. That’s our long-term strategy for building sports excellence,” he said.

Despite limited input in venue allocation, Hon. Isiaka expressed the state’s readiness to host the NSF and provide a memorable experience for athletes and spectators alike
