As the National Sports Festival in Ogun State enters a critical weekend phase, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Ogun State Government, Honourable Kayode Akimade, has reassured Nigerians of the state’s strong security framework, confidently declaring the festival hitch-free thus far.
Speaking exclusively to Sports247 at the event’s media center on Thursday, Akimade affirmed that Ogun State remains secure, attributing the peaceful environment to comprehensive planning and proactive measures by the government.

“Yeah, if you look around, you see that we do not have any security challenge in Ogun State,” Akimade said. “We put every necessary structure in place to ensure that we have a hitch-free fiesta.”
He emphasized the strategic deployment of law enforcement officers across key locations, including the media center, accommodation hubs, and venues, to ensure continuous order and safety throughout the festival.
Addressing concerns over the increasing number of visitors expected during the weekend, Akimade downplayed any potential risks. He noted that Ogun State is accustomed to heavy daily traffic, particularly due to its proximity to Lagos, and that the arrival of approximately 11,000 to 15,000 additional guests poses no unusual threat.
“It is not the so-called 11,000 or 15,000 people that just come in that will create any security challenge,” he stated. “Having 15,000 in addition is just like, it doesn’t have any security effect.”
Beyond safety, Akimade commended the overall organization of the festival, particularly the decision to house all athletes at Babcock University, which he described as a “games village.”
“The essence of this game is to bring the young generation together in a particular place, let them interface, let them interact, let them bring friendship,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the festival’s roots, which trace back to 1970 following the Nigerian Civil War, Akimade emphasized its original mission: fostering national unity and cultural integration through sport.
“We believe that there is a need for a sport activity that can bring Nigerians together, to share best practices, and promote oneness,” he said.
He concluded by highlighting the communal atmosphere of the event, where athletes live, dine, and compete together — a testament to the festival’s enduring spirit of camaraderie and fair play.
With Ogun State maintaining its role as a proactive and peaceful host, the National Sports Festival continues to embody the values of unity, youth engagement, and national pride.
Athletics, one of the highlight of the festival will start at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena on Friday all through the weekend as the Competition enters crucial stage.
