The 22nd National Sports Festival, themed Gateway Games, has officially kicked off in Abeokuta with a vibrant opening ceremony.
Representing President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated the administration’s dedication to leveraging sports as a tool for national unity, youth development, and the country’s greatness.

The MKO Abiola Sports Arena, recently upgraded to a 10,000-capacity facility, came alive with energetic cultural performances, colorful displays, and a parade of athletes from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The spectacle celebrated Nigeria’s diversity and unity through sport.
President Tinubu, in his message delivered by Vice President Shettima, highlighted the integration of Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) as a strategic move to nurture young talent and prepare them for future national and international competitions.
He also applauded the organizers for aligning the event with the economic vision of his Renewed Hope agenda, emphasizing the potential of sports as a driver of national prosperity.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, host of the festival, underscored Ogun State’s commitment to youth empowerment through sports, noting that the decision to host the games was rooted in the desire to harness sports for economic development.
National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Chief Bukola Olopade hailed the structural transition from the Federal Ministry of Sports to a commission, describing it as a vital step towards professionalism and growth in the sector.
They urged athletes to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The grand ceremony was attended by dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, state governors, ministers, and lawmakers.
Music star Davido electrified the audience with a performance that added to the evening’s excitement.
Meanwhile, some events such as Kung Fu, weightlifting, and badminton had already begun at various venues ahead of the official opening.
