2026 WAFCON: Injured Ashleigh Plumptre Sends Emotional Message as Madugu Unveils Super Falcons Squad

Nigeria defender Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed her disappointment at missing the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after being ruled out through injury, while urging Nigerians to throw their full support behind the Super Falcons as they begin the defence of their continental crown.

Plumptre, one of the key figures in Nigeria’s successful 2025 WAFCON campaign, took to social media to explain her absence shortly after Head Coach Justine Madugu announced his 25-player squad for the tournament in Morocco.

“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening. Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again.

“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you.

“I am with you ladies, Naija no dey carry last,” Plumptre wrote.

Madugu’s squad is headlined by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, first-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, veteran defender Osinachi Ohale, midfielder Jennifer Echegini and six-time African Women’s Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala.

The 25-player list also includes Michelle Alozie, Oluwatosin Demehin, Christy Ucheibe, Halimatu Ayinde, Toni Payne, Deborah Abiodun, Gift Monday, Esther Okoronkwo, Francisca Ordega, Omorinsola Babajide, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Uchenna Kanu.

Nigeria, the defending champions and record 10-time winners, will compete in Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia and tournament debutants Malawi. All of the Super Falcons’ group matches will be played in Rabat.

The 2026 WAFCON, scheduled for July 26 to August 16 in Morocco, will feature 16 teams for the first time.

The four semi-finalists will qualify automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, while the fifth-placed team will advance to the intercontinental playoffs.

The Super Falcons are aiming to extend their dominance in African women’s football by claiming a record 11th WAFCON title after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in last year’s dramatic final.
