The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is already living up to its billing as one of the keenly contested leagues on the continent.
Matchday Three produced a cocktail of drama, relief, heartbreak, and early warnings for teams yet to find their rhythm.
From long-awaited revivals to stuttering starts, here are five things you need to know from the weekend action.
Kwara United, Rangers Begin Revival
For Kwara United and Enugu Rangers, Matchday Three brought much-needed relief.
Both sides, previously winless, finally clicked into gear.
Rangers overcame Plateau United 2–0 in Enugu, with Chidozie Iwundu and Chidiebere Nwobodo delivering the decisive blows.
Kwara United also delighted their home fans, cruising past debutants Kun Khalifat 2–0 in Ilorin to register their first three points of the campaign.
Both sides become the number 11 and 12 teams with at least a win this while 8 teams are looking for their first win of the season after three matches.
Plateau United in Free Fall Continues
If Rangers’ joy was a story of revival, Plateau United’s misery was a tale of despair.
Three matches in, the former champions are without a goal, without a point, and already staring down the barrel, rooted at the bottom of the log, lifeless.
Their lifeless start has made them the only team yet to find the net this season, a worrying statistic for a club with lofty ambitions.
Derby Days, Mixed Fortunes
Derby fixtures always carry spice, and Matchday Three did not disappoint.
In the Northwest Derby, Kano Pillars’ early-season struggles deepened after a narrow 1–0 defeat to Katsina United.
In Ibadan, Shooting Stars and Ikorodu City renewed their budding rivalry in the Southwest Derby, playing out a 1–1 stalemate.
For Ikorodu City, it was their third consecutive draw, while 3SC are still in search of balance after wholesale change made at the management level of the club ahead of the new season.
Warri Wolves, Bayelsa United Knocked Off Perch
Warri Wolves and Bayelsa United began the season brightly, but both stumbled for the first time this weekend.
Wolves were edged 1–0 by defending champions Remo Stars in Ikenne, while Bayelsa United fell to Niger Tornadoes by the same scoreline.
Both sides also conceded their first goals of the campaign, losing their perfect starts.
New Boys Finding It Tough
As expected, life in the NPFL has been unforgiving for debutants Barau FC and Kun Khalifat.
After three matches, the pair remain winless. Barau at least managed a 1–1 draw with Bendel Insurance, but Kun Khalifat looked overwhelmed in Ilorin, suffering their second straight defeat.
Unless they adapt quickly, survival will become an uphill battle.
