Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has accepted full responsibility for Nigeria’s humiliating 4–0 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, describing the early goal conceded as the turning point that completely derailed his team’s plan.
The Flying Eagles came into the match with high hopes of securing a quarterfinal berth but were undone by a disastrous start. Barely 65 seconds into the game, Argentina’s Alejo Sarco pounced on a low cross to put his team ahead — the fastest goal of the tournament. From that moment, Nigeria never truly recovered.

Speaking after the game, a visibly dejected Zubairu admitted that the early goal “shattered” the team’s rhythm. “That goal destabilized us,” he said. “We went into the game with a specific plan, but once we conceded so early, the boys lost confidence and struggled to find their footing.”
Argentina doubled their lead midway through the first half with a stunning free kick from Maher Carrizo, before Carrizo added another in the second half. Mateo Silvetti sealed the rout with a curling finish in the 66th minute to complete Nigeria’s misery.
Zubairu, who has faced increasing criticism over the team’s tactical discipline, did not shy away from responsibility. “I take full blame for the defeat,” he declared. “As the head coach, it’s my duty to prepare the team. We didn’t show enough fight, and I must accept that the opponents were better on the day.”
The coach acknowledged that while the loss was painful, it must serve as a learning curve. “We need to go back, review our mistakes, and rebuild,” he said. “Nigerian football must rediscover its edge at youth level.”
