Zubairu Praises Nigeria’s Resilience as Flying Eagles Set Up Argentina Clash After Colombia Draw

Nigeria’s U20 coach Aliyu Zubairu has hailed his players’ resilience and tactical discipline after the Flying Eagles battled to a 1-1 draw with Colombia to seal qualification for the Round of 16 at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

At the start of the day, Colombia were already assured of progression, while Nigeria needed at least a point to stay alive. After a pulsating contest at the Estadio Fiscal in Talca, both teams shared the spoils — a result that sent the Flying Eagles through as one of the best third-placed nations.

Nigeria came close on several occasions in the first half, hitting the post once and the crossbar twice in a dominant spell that showcased their attacking intent.

Despite their pressure, the breakthrough came at the other end six minutes into the second half when Kener González finished sharply past 15-year-old Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezar Harcourt, already capped at senior level.

The Flying Eagles refused to wilt, pushing for an equaliser as Colombian goalkeeper Jordan García produced a series of stunning saves to preserve his team’s lead.

But Nigeria’s persistence was finally rewarded late in the game when captain Daniel Bameyi converted a penalty in the 86th minute — his second successful spot-kick in as many matches — to secure the vital point.

Speaking after the match, Coach Aliyu Zubairu commended his team’s fighting spirit and tactical awareness against a strong Colombian side.

“It wasn’t easy, but we stood our ground and were proactive,” Zubairu said. “We knew they are physically strong and good on the ball, so we tried to deny them passing lanes, and that gave us a little edge. All we wanted was to qualify for the next round, and we are not worried about who we have to face.”

The result means Nigeria advance to the knockout stage, where they will face Argentina, the only team to have won all three of their group games. The fixture sets up a highly anticipated rematch — two years after the Flying Eagles eliminated Argentina at the same stage.

As the tournament enters its decisive rounds, Zubairu’s side carry momentum and belief, their resilience in Talca serving as proof that Nigeria’s famed youth football pedigree remains alive on the world stage.
