Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubairu has praised his team’s performance despite their narrow 1-0 defeat to Norway in the opening game of the 24th FIFA U20 World Cup, insisting that the players did enough to deserve a better result.
Norway struck early from the penalty spot in the 9th minute through Sondre Holten, and although Nigeria dominated possession and created several chances, they were unable to find an equalizer. Kparobo Arierhi, Tahir Maigana, and Nasiru Salihu all went close, while the Flying Eagles were denied two strong penalty appeals.

Speaking after the match, Zubairu admitted that the result was disappointing but expressed pride in his players’ efforts. “The boys did everything possible to win this game,” he said. “We created chances, we dominated play, but football is sometimes cruel. Despite all our pressure, we couldn’t get the goal we needed. That is football. What matters now is how we respond in the next match.”
Zubairu stressed the importance of shifting focus quickly to Thursday’s must-win clash against Saudi Arabia. “We cannot dwell on this defeat for too long. Our attention now is on Saudi Arabia, and we must give everything to win. Losing two games in a World Cup group stage makes qualification very difficult, so we know what is at stake.”
The coach also praised the mentality of his players despite the setback. “I am proud of the fighting spirit of these young men. They showed resilience and courage against a very disciplined Norway side. We will improve our finishing and come back stronger.”
The Flying Eagles, two-time U20 World Cup finalists, must now beat Saudi Arabia to keep their hopes of progressing alive.
